"When I won my first Bafta [For 1987's BBC TV series Tutti Frutti, which scooped six] I'd never heard of the awards. I went into the BBC to talk about the upcoming one, which would be Your Cheatin' Heart and I remember being in the tearoom at the BBC and the TV was saying there were 17 Bafta nominations for Tutti Frutti - and that was the first I'd heard of it. I thought 'My God', it was brilliant. Then...I wasn't invited."
